For more than a decade, UofL Health Care (University Hospital and the James Brown Cancer Center) and its partners the Kentucky Cancer Program and University of Louisville’s Health Sciences Center have been providing valuable health screening opportunities—either free or at a reduced rate.
As part of the mission to provide community outreach, the entities of UofL Health Care and its partners have used the State Fair as opportunity to interact with the citizens of Kentucky and provide valuable health education tools.
During this year’s Fair, from August 16-26, everything from mammograms to pediatric dental screenings was provided
to more than 7,000 men, women and children.
- James Graham Brown Cancer Center’s Mobile Mammography Van performed 341 mammograms (at a discounted rate).
- The Kentucky Cancer Program provided 1,700 free prostate screenings and 1,551 skin cancer screenings.
- University of Louisville’s School of Dentistry students screened 200 people for oral cancer. In partnership with the Kentucky Dental Association, 1,339 children received free dental screenings; 1,118 children received sealants; and 79 children received fluoride varnishes.
- University Hospital’s Stroke Center educated approximately 600 seniors on the warning signs of stroke.
- University Hospital’s Outpatient Pharmacy counseled approximately 800 seniors about the importance of keeping a current and accurate listing of all the prescription and over the counter drugs, along with herbal supplements.
Many of these services are also offered throughout the year …
