Radiation Therapy Program

The Radiation Therapy School is inactive during the transition period of September 2011 to July 2012.  Please contact Harry C. Nickens, Ed.D. at (859) 336-5082 ext. 1100 for additional information on the transition of the program to a B.S. degree in Radiation Therapy at St. Catharine College.

Radiation Oncology Physicians, Residents, Medical Radiation Physicists, Radiobiologists, Oncology Nurses, Dosimetrists, and Radiation Therapists serve as the primary didactic and clinical instructors for the program.

The 12 month School for the Radiation Therapist begins around the 1st week in September each year. The curriculum consists of approximately 360 hours didactic courses and 950 hours clinical experience.At present, no academic credit is granted for the courses taught at our institution.

All students are expected to be in the Department of Radiation Oncology Monday through Thursday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.Some variation in the hours might occur throughout the year to accommodate the didactic and clinical teaching. A two week vacation/sick/injury leave is permitted during the program in addition to recognized national holidays.

Program Costs

The tuition for the program is $3000. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required upon acceptance. The remaining $2900 is due the first week of the school term. After school commences, tuition may be refunded in accordance with the following schedule:

Within 1st Month Amount Refunded $2550
Within 2nd Month Amount Refunded $2000
Within 3rd Month Amount Refunded $1500
Within 4th Month Amount Refunded $1000

After 4 months in the program, tuition is non-refundable. Purchase of textbooks is the responsibility of the student. Costs of the textbooks are approximately $600. Housing and meals are the responsibility of the individual student.

Admission Requirements

A candidate must qualify by:

Graduation from a JRCERT accredited program in Radiography and a passing score on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) examination in diagnostic radiography. Additionally, beginning in the school year 2013, the program will require candidates to have attained an Associates or higher degree in radiography for consideration of admission to the program.

All applications should be submitted on the provided forms along with School of Radiography transcripts. Any additional college and/or vocational school transcripts must be provided, if attended. All data must be submitted by March 1st of the year in which the appointment is sought and the cut off date for all interviews will be May 30th. A personal interview is mandatory, however, at the discretion of the Program Officials, an alternate interview option may be allowed due to extenuating circumstances.

Physical/emotional health and technical standards must be suitable to the requirements of a Radiation Therapist (See attached Technical Standards).

Upon acceptance into the program, a student must complete a physical examination in the hospital’s Employee Health department within two weeks of beginning the program. The student will also be required to submit a copy of current immunization certificate to the hospital. UofL Health Care also requires criminal background check and drug screening. The hospital policy concerning these required screenings will be mailed to the student following acceptance into the program.
